Anatomic Evidence Suggestive of Axo-Axonic Synapses in the dog Pontine Nuclei

Abstract
Ultrastructural observations were performed to examine the existence of axo-axonic synapses in order to assess a question whether local circuit neurons might exist in the dog pontine nuclei. Two types of axo-axonic synapses were observed. One was a glomerular-type synaptic complex where a central, bulb-shaped bouton made synaptic contacts with several axon terminals as well as a large number of dendritic structures. The other was a non-glomerular type where an elongated bouton made synaptic contacts with one or two axon terminals as well as dendrites. In both types of synaptic complexes, presynaptic boutons contained a large number of round synaptic vesicles and formed Gray¢¥s type I asymmetric contact with postsynaptic structures, while postsynaptic axon terminals possessed less amount of synaptic vesicles which included round as well as flattened ones. Serial synapses where postsynaptic axon terminals made synaptic contact with dendritic profiles were rarely observed
